Can I use a dash cam in Spain?

In short: Yes, you can legally fit and use a dash cam in Spain; just install it unobtrusively, don’t operate it while you drive, and handle your recordings in line with data-protection rules.

Under Spanish traffic regulations, dash cams are perfectly legal so long as they don’t obstruct your field of vision. In fact, the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) explicitly permits cameras mounted on the windscreen or dashboard – provided they’re positioned so as not to interfere with your view of the road.

Violating this rule can incur an €80–€100 fine, but it isn’t considered a traffic offence.

However, operating – or even adjusting the dash cam while driving is treated much like using a mobile phone. If you touch or fiddle with the device when the vehicle is in motion, you risk a €200 fine plus a three-point deduction from your licence

Recorded footage.

Since video containing identifiable faces or number plates counts as personal data, sharing it publicly (for example on social media or WhatsApp) without consent can lead to penalties.

Continuous recording of public areas is discouraged. Dash cams should trigger only on movement or impact, and any bystanders’ faces or plates must be blurred before you disseminate the clip.

Filming police or emergency personnel on duty is also prohibited unless you’re submitting footage as part of an official investigation
